  • Black Public Media’s 2023 annual open call invites proposals of climate stories for traditional media projects that present the voice of the Black community as it relates to our changing environment. Awards include one $30,000 award for a stand-alone or limited series short project (documentary or scripted), five $40,000 awards for broadcast-length or feature projects, plus an invitation to compete in PitchBLACK Forum, and one $150,000 PitchBLACK Award for a broadcast-length or feature project.   • The Fresh Voices Fellowship is open for submissions. This fellowship supports one emerging Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other writer of color who does not have a BA nor MFA in creative writing, and is not currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. One writer, in prose or poetry, will receive a $2,000 stipend, publication in a print issue of Epiphany, and more. The deadline to submit is September 15, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Okra Project partnered with Uber to offer Black trans individuals with $100 Uber credit to use for meals or rides in September. Qualified applicants will be selected at random, but Black trans femmes receive priority. The application window is September 1 - September 6. Learn more and apply here.

  • New Profit is accepting applications for their Civic Lab Catalyze Cohort. Eight organizations developing initiative solutions that build civic trust and inclusive democracy in the U.S. will receive a $100,000 unrestricted investment, in-kind capacity-building support, and access to a peer learning community over the course of one year.   • Multidisciplinary Artists for Transformative Change (MATCH) is a fellowship program preparing artists for myriad permanent employment opportunities through a publicly engaged cross-sector fellowship. The MATCH residency program will pair selected candidates and local partners with the goal of fostering collaborations and artist-driven projects that exist at the intersection of the creative industry, local enterprise, and community development. Residents will receive $20,000 for an 8-month residency embedded within a host site business or organization. The deadline for submissions is September 16, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Cricket Island Foundation’s (CIF) Leadership Transition Fund provides multi-year general operating support to support youth-led social change organizations through the leadership transition process, with a focus on supporting BIPOC leaders. Grantees receive $45,000 per year for three years, in addition to peer learning and coaching support alongside a small group of peer grantees. The deadline to apply is September 8, 2023.   • In partnership with the California Arts Council, The Center for Cultural Power is providing $15,000 awards to 30 Culture Bearers who live and/or work in specific California zip codes to develop new or existing projects and/or content that advances at least one of the CAC’s focus areas. There are also $15,000 awards available to 30 artist disrupters. The deadline to apply for these awards is September 22, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • People's Climate Innovation Center is accepting applications from BIPOC folks 18-28 years old for their Young Climate Leaders of Color (YCLC) cohort. Participants will receive mentorship, monthly virtual workshops, networking, and $5,000 for their time and for direct implementation of a project if they choose.   • Maine Youth Power opened applications for their Movement Building School, a first of its kind program in Maine to scale up activated young rural Mainers (ages 17-22) into movement organizing for the future. This program will include 10 training sessions that run from mid September 2023 through mid April 2024. Participants will receive a $700 stipend. Applications are open between July 1st - September 15th, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Our Turn launched their 2023-2024 Youth Power Fellowship Opportunities. The Youth Power Fellow Cohort develops students into grassroots organizers and leaders who fight for educational justice in their communities. The Fellowship will run from September-May. The time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours a week (about 30 hours per month) with an hourly pay of $17/hour. Positions are open to high school and college students who are 16 or older at the time of program launch. The deadline to apply is September 9, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Monument Lab is hosting its first-ever artist residency program for Philadelphia public artists. Two Philadelphia emerging public artists will be selected to create prototype projects that will be exhibited at the end of the year-long residency and will receive a $10K artist stipend, $20K production budget, and $7500 in support for neighborhood-based partners and programming.   • The Dots Between opened applications for their 2024 fellowship, a financial coaching program administered virtually for six-months and offered at no cost for artists of any medium, career stage and location. The 2024 cohort will be a group of 10 with at least six spots for SW based artists in NM, AZ, TX,  and CO. This session will come with an honorarium for participation.   • Soul Fire Farm launched their Climate and Equity Policy Re-Grant in an effort to move grant funding in equitable ways to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color led organizations engaging in climate policy advocacy. Grant awards will range from $500-$2,500. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis until all resources have been expended. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Mobilize Power Fund is a rapid response fund that resources gender justice organizations to adapt or pivot their work when met with unanticipated, time-sensitive opportunities or threats to their movement building work and organizing conditions. Monthly deadlines vary each month at midnight in your time zone, with the exception of July, August, November, and December for program break. Learn more and apply here.

  • Emergent Fund is a rolling, monthly rapid response and emergent organizing grant for movement and frontline communities responding to urgent and specific unanticipated crises or opportunities to build power. Applications are due every third Thursday each month. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Creative Equations Fund is a hyper-local fund supporting Brooklyn-based community-engaged artists, arts-organizations, cultural entrepreneurs, and researchers  who dedicate their creativity to solving social problems. Grant awards are $10,000 each. The deadline to apply is October 8, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Monument Lab Re:Generation supports teams of two or more individuals working together to create a new or expand an existing public-facing project. Each selected Re:Generation team will receive a total of $100,000 in unrestricted funding towards their commemorative campaign or project. The deadline to submit a proposal is October 2, 2023.   • Black Trans Men Inc. is offering a grant of up to $1000 to assist with the financial obligation for undergoing elective gender affirming top surgery for Black and African American trans men. Learn more and submit a Gender Affirming Surgery Financial Assistance Application here.

  • Social Impact Labs awards $1,000 to support community projects. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and remain eligible for six months. Apply by the end of a given month to be considered for the following month’s award. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund (BJTRF) provides assistance for Black journalists facing financial hardship who are unable to pay for mental health support. Learn more and apply for funding here.

  • The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides emergency grants of up to $10,000 for stories on threats to democracy in the US. The fund reviews proposals on a rolling basis and ends on December 31st, 2023. Learn more and submit a proposal here.

  • The Black List is now accepting applications for the 2024 NRDC Climate Storytelling Fellowship. The Fellowship will grant $20,000 each to three writers to support revision of a feature screenplay or pilot that engages with climate change in a compelling way through events, actions, character, emotions, plot, and/or setting. Each fellowship recipient will retain complete ownership of their work. The deadline for this program is November 27, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Eyebeam’s 2024 Democracy Machine fellowship program is about to enter its third and final phase. Selected artists participating in this six-month program will receive a $20,000 stipend and work in fellowship to support the development and implementation of their projects. Eyebeam will select five non-New York-based artists from anywhere in the world and five NYC-based artists for this fellowship. The fellowship will run from February 15, 2024, through August 15, 2024.   • The Ktisis Capital Fellowship Program launched applications for one Programs & Learning fellow and one Communications fellow. Their fellowship program was developed to support the project-based and content area needs of the firm and to support young professionals with aspirations of working in philanthropy and/or social justice. The fellowship will run September-December 2023 and fellows will receive a stipend of $5,000. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Get Up, Rise Up direct action fund supports activists globally to shift power through strategic nonviolent direct actions. This fund is open for established groups (formal or informal), and in some cases individuals, who have been working on a specific issue or cause and are seeking funding for a direct action or a direct action tool (explained below) as part of an ongoing campaign.   • Kentucky Health Justice Network accepts funding requests from Kentucky residents seeking financial assistance for gender affirming care/items via their Trans Health Advocacy program. Learn more and submit a request here.

August Deadlines

  • Queer to Stay, an LGBTQ+ Preservation Initiative, opened application to support at least 25 LGBTQ+ serving businesses based on the communities they serve and their financial need. Successful applications will receive a one-time, untaxed donation to support their business. The deadline to apply is August 31, 2023. Learn more about eligibility requirements and apply here.

  • Flashlight Collective is offering $500 - $1,000 grants to U.S.-based freelance investigative journalists. Journalists retain complete editorial control and are free to publish their work wherever they like. Applications are due August 20. Learn more and apply here.

  • The HEAL fellowship aims to serve youth struggling with mental health issues by supporting U.S. journalists to report on and amplify solutions.  Ten U.S journalists will be selected based on the strength of their project’s equity component, and how closely their project proposals align with the following four HEAL criteria. HEAL fellows will receive an honorarium of up to $5,000, proportional to the scope of the fellow’s project.   • The BIPOC Farming Network Policy Fellowship is a six-month program to provide those working in agriculture and food systems fields an understanding of public policy, including knowledge in the policymaking and legislative process at the local, state and federal level. The fellowship comes with a $18 an hour stipend, paid monthly. A kick-off activity will be held on Saturday, September 30 at the Black Farming Conference. The first module will begin in October 2023 and will end May 2024 with closing activities. The application deadline is August 11, 2023 and fellows will be notified of selection by September 1, 2023.   • Girl Plus Environment announced their Energy Justice Ambassador Program, a 6-month opportunity created to help mobilize Black and Brown women and non-binary folks in Atlanta to advocate for clean, affordable, equitable energy policy through training on energy communication, community action, and receive support facilitating community education events to foster energy justice in our communities. Participants will receive $500 stipends for community energy justice events, resources and effective advocacy strategies, networking, and more. Applicants must be available for the 2-day in-person convening on September 8th and 9th and for (5) one-hour monthly virtual trainings on October 3rd, November 7th, December 5th, January 9th, and February 6th.   • The 2023 Docs in Action program is looking for short films that will uplift the surge of workers refusing to remain silent and grow the current wave of worker-led organizing. Filmmakers can apply for up to $30,000 to support completion of short documentary films, under 30 minutes, that have already begun production. Funding for a work-in-progress can only be applied to the cost of completing the project. Applications are open until August 13, 2023. Learn more here and apply here.

  • The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for their Kari Howard Fund for Narrative Journalism Grant program. The program provides grants of up to $5,000 for print journalists or print journalists leading a multi-media team anywhere in the world (although projects must be reported and published in English). Applicants must identify as women or nonbinary to be eligible. The deadline to apply for funding is August 20. Learn more and apply here.

  • Investigative Reporters and Editors is accepting applications for its Freelance Fellowship program, a program providing financial assistance to independent journalists working on investigative projects. Fellows can be awarded up to $2,000 for short-term or up to $4,000 for long-term projects, plus a one-year IRE membership. The deadline to apply is August 28. Learn more and apply here.

  • Study Hall is awarding $4000 in total grant money to individuals or teams who want to start a media project which they will own entirely. Along with this micro funding, Study Hall will provide mentoring, advice, and some social promotion. The last day to apply is August 31, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is seeking a Co-Instructor for its Emerging Leaders Fellowship, an intensive cohort program designed for people with 3-5 years of experience in movement work, including but not limited to, labor unions, policy, organizing, and advocacy work. Instructors can be based anywhere in the United States, as long as they can fly in for their fall and winter retreat dates, September 18-22, 2023 and December 4-8, 2023, respectively. Leaders who identify as Black Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC), working-class, immigrant, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and other historically marginalized identities and strongly encourages these people to apply. This is an independent contract position that pays $20,000. Applications are due by August 11, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Applications are now open for the 2023-24 Vocal Justice Teacher Fellowship. Between October 2023 and May 2024, fellows will implement weekly one-hour lessons with a consistent group of 15+ students. Fellows will receive a $1,500 stipend and engage in monthly community-building and professional learning workshops. The deadline to apply is August 30, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Jim Collins Foundation offers two grant options to provide financial assistance to trans people for gender affirming surgeries. The Founders' Grant covers 100% of the surgical costs associated with a gender-affirming surgery. The Krysallis Anne Hembrough Legacy Fund covers 50% of the surgical costs associated with a gender-affirming surgery, the recipient provides the other 50% using their own financial resources. Applicants may only apply once per grant cycle, and in their application, must choose to be considered for either the Founders' Grant or the Krysallis Anne Hembrough Legacy Fund.   • Zaccho Dance Theatre’s Black Futures Artist in Residence Program is open to diverse voices, emerging and established, called to express the Black experience through an arts practice that inspires dialogue and builds community. All Bay Area Black theater, dance, and interdisciplinary artists, as well as collaborative teams are eligible to apply. Individuals and collaborative teams selected for the Black Futures residency program will receive a $6,000 stipend which can be used how the resident sees fit, $2,500 to support the production of your work during the residency or to host an in-person engagement event for the Bayview community, a $1,000 stipend to a mentor of your choice to support you during your residency, and more. Four residencies will be awarded and will take place from October 2023 to June 2024. The deadline to apply is August 18, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Data Future’s Lab’s Infrastructure Fund will provide awards of up to $50K for tools that fuel a more fair data economy. The deadline to submit a letter of intent is August 31, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Applications recently opened for Impact Kickstart 2023, a Working Film’s program created to fill a gap in support for the impact campaigns of underrepresented filmmakers, including directors who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or people of color (BIPOC), undocumented, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and female directors with a majority female and/or underrepresented film team. Two films will be selected for Impact Kickstart in 2023. Impact Kickstart recipients will receive impact campaign funding of $60,000 and 1:1 Mentorship support.   • The Alaska Center Education Fund seeks 2-3 young Alaskans (18-30) for their Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship. The Fellows Program runs August 7, 2023 - October 6, 2023 and includes a $2,000 stipend. Learn more and apply here.

  • The 19th Annual Chicago Food Justice Summit is currently seeking food justice advocates who are interested in leading each working group for their summit. A total of eight leaders, two leaders for each group, will be chosen and each person will be offered a $1,500 stipend. Each position will last from September through March and require approximately 60 hours of work over the full period. Applications are due by August 6, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Humanity in Action is accepting applications for its 2023-2024 Landecker Democracy Fellowship program. Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Fellows will receive hands-on training, support, and a stipend of €15,000 ($16,380.90 USD). Applicants can be based anywhere within the US, UK, EU, or Ukraine. The deadline to apply is August 6.

  • The Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is also looking for Movement Mentors for their Emerging Leaders Fellowship. Movement Mentors provide guidance and support to help fellows chart their professional trajectory in the social change field, share their networks and resources to help fellows build a broad and deep professional network to support their sustainability, and assist fellows in applying learnings from cohort sessions to real world organizing contexts. Selected mentors will receive $1,000 to meet with their Fellow for a minimum of 4 meetings over the course of the mentoring period (from September-December 2023). Interested candidates are invited to complete a brief online profile by August 4, 2023.

  • TransLash News & Narrative is accepting applications from trans and gender-nonconforming journalists based in Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Georgia. TransLash News Fellows will cover U.S. politics and daily life for trans and gender nonconforming folks during their three-month residencies. Journalists are paid $750 per written article.   • The OpEd Project launched the Public Voices Fellowship on Technology in the Public Interest, a fellowship in partnership with MacArthur Foundation, that seeks to elevate diverse voices for tech equity. The year-long fellowship is for individuals who have expertise and experience conducting research and/or advocacy that addresses the social impacts of technology.   • Applications are open for the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant, a project-based award providing $25,000 to an individual woman, non-binary, and/or transgender U.S. filmmaker, age 39 or older, who is working on their first narrative feature (65 minutes or over) as a director.   • Leeway Foundation is accepting applications for their Art and Change Grant, which provides grants of up to $2,500 to fund art for social change projects by women, trans*, and/or gender nonconforming artists and cultural producers living in Greater Philadelphia.   • Parenting for Liberation launched their annual Black Parent Innovation Fund, a fund for Black parents in California. 10 Black parents fellows will receive $5,000 each to test an idea in the community that creates solutions to problems impacting Black families.   • Point of Pride’s HRT Access Fund is a scholarship-like program that provides direct financial assistance to trans folks who cannot afford their gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (also known as "HRT.") The next application cycle will accept applications from June 15 through July 31, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Shape of Cities to Come Institute (SCCI) invites organizers, activists, thinkers, cultural workers, writers, science nerds and artists from across New York City's grassroots communities and movements for a transdisciplinary cohort to collectively unpack urban processes, build capacity through narrative organizing, workshop issues and nurture relationships with other committed folks. This opportunity includes a stipend of $10,000 over 15 months and additional childcare support on a case by case basis. Deadline to apply is July 24, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Abolishing Patriarchal Violence table of the Movement for Black Lives is accepting applications for their 2023-24 Kitchen Table Fellowship, a 6 month, project-based fellowship. Fellows will receive $21,000 annual compensation and healthcare benefits. Applications are accepted until July 16, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists and provides critical support to their continuing work. Qualified artists must be self-identified Black trans women and trans femmes working in visual art and based in the United States. Applications are due by July 12, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Out in the Open launched a pilot cohort for their Rural LGBTQ+ Power & Belonging (RLPB) Fellowship. The RLPB Fellowship is an opportunity for adults who identify as LGBTQ+ and who are currently residing in rural Waldo or Penobscot counties of Penobscot Territory/Maine. Participants will receive a $1750 stipend, as well as food, lodging, and financial support for childcare and transportation while participating in fellowship activities, and more.   • TransTech Social recently opened applications for their Third Annual Monica Roberts Blogger Award and Essay Contest. Applications are due by July 14, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • The Artist Trust opened 2023 applications for Endurance Grants, unrestricted emergency need-based grants of $2,500 to artists working in all disciplines across Washington State to assist with an unforeseen emergency, crisis, or catastrophic event. These 40 grants will fund artists who identify with one or more of the following communities: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and/or Native, LGBTQIA+, immunocompromised, with immigrant status, have or are living with a disability, residing outside King County, and/or low income.   • Puppet Showplace Theater is offering five $1,000 grants to Black artists to support the research and development of original puppetry work for their 2023 Creative Residency for Black Puppeteers. Artists will meet virtually with their cohort and cohort mentor while working on their project over a 2-month period beginning in August 2023. Applications are due by July 20, 2023.   • Mijente recently opened applications for their 2023 La Vida Loca(l) initiative, an opportunity for Mijente members (and anyone with a proposal) to apply for up to $5,000 to support the building and sustaining of local Mijente organizing work specifically focused on building power without the state. Proposals should focus on projects and campaigns that build collective autonomy, community buen vivir and self-governance structures. Deadline to apply is July 24, 2023. Learn more and apply here.

  • Bertha Foundation is excited to announce the launch of the fifth Bertha Challenge: an opportunity for activists and investigative journalists to spend a year working on one pressing social justice challenge and to deliver a body of work at the end of the Fellowship year. Successful applicants will receive non-residential paid Fellowships and project budgets to work independently and together to look at the causes of and solutions to disinformation.   • Black Transmen Inc. will award Free New & Gently Used binders for transmen of color in low-income communities through the Brother 2 Brother Health Grant program, designed to support a safe and healthy transition, providing binders to those who are in need, and simply cannot afford to purchase a binder on their own.   • The Nurture Forward Directory, created by You Are More Than Inc. (YAMT), includes low-cost to free therapy options for survivors based in California, Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.   • Collective Action for Safe Spaces released their COVID Community Care Resources (2023) Guide, an updated COVID resource guide with tangible strategies to help decrease the spread and to enact care for those dealing with current and long COVID.

  • The New to Freelancing guide by the Freelance Solidarity Project provides support and resources to media workers who are freelancing for the first time. Their guide includes contract advice, rate databases, and more.

  • Accessible Social is a free resource and education hub that shares best practices for creating accessible and inclusive social media content.

  • Trans Closet Hudson Valley gives free, gender-affirming clothing, supplies, and/or accessories to any trans person in the Hudson Valley who is transitioning to a new wardrobe or who is seeking new clothes. They also share a nationwide list of trans closets and resources.

  • BlackLine is a hotline geared towards the Black, Black LGBTQI, Brown, Native and Muslim community. The purpose of the BlackLine is to provide people with an anonymous and confidential avenue to report negative, physical, and inappropriate contact with police and vigilantes.   • Boundless Arc recently published an Equitable Hiring Tools Directory, a living resource that aggregates organizations actively working to reduce bias in hiring practices and help historically marginalized people find new jobs.

  • Rainbow Migration helps LGBTQI+ people though asylum and immigration system. Learn more about their work and services here. They also have a robust list of other organizations who can help LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum.

  • Queer Food Foundation is a resource for queer folks in food and to promote and find queer food spaces. View their directory here.

  • TransLatinx Network provides a variety of services, including a pantry in Manhattan once a month on Wednesdays and occasionally in Queens. Included are healthy foods, hygiene kits, and PPE. Services can be requested here.

  • Eviction Representation for All has a list of local nonprofit law firms, based in Oregon, offering free or low-cost eviction representation to low to moderate income tenants. Learn more about their programs and if you qualify here.

For trans women and trans femmes interested in being included in their directory, submissions of trans-led businesses and/or preferred payment methods can be made here.

  • Black Trans Foundation compiles a bulk of resources to better support trans women and trans femmes, including numerous ways allies can support trans people in the UK.

  • Rainbow Railroad helps LGBTQI+ people facing violence, oppression, and lack of safety in countries outside of the U.S. and Canada with multiple support programs to fit individual needs and develop a path to safety. Requests for help can be submitted here.

  • Cecilia’s Occupational Inclusion Network (COIN) is a a free healthcare program for sex workers in an affirming, supportive environment. COIN Clinic appointments are available at all Callen-Lorde locations.
